HEAD INJURY

Head injuries are damage to the skull or brain caused by trauma. Head injury damages the tissues and structures that surround the skull. It harms the head or upper neck of the body. The pain caused by injuries can be a dull ache, throbbing, mild or intense. Common Head injuries are concussions, skull fractures, and a scalp wound. DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEAD INJURIES

TREATMENT

  • Mild injuries require no treatment other than rest and over-the-counter pain relievers to treat a headache.
  • Anti-seizure drugs are given during the first week of treatment to avoid any additional brain damage caused by a seizure.
  • Coma- inducing drugs are used to put patients in a temporary coma to reduce the need for oxygen of the brain.
  • Diuretics reduce the amount of fluid in tissues and increase urine output. This helps in reducing pressure inside the brain.
  • Surgeries are performed to remove blood clots from the brain that puts pressure on the brain and damages its tissue.
  • Bleeding and fracture of the brain can be stopped by surgeries.
  • A serious brain injury needs rehabilitation to regain the full functioning of the brain

PREVENTION

There are several measures which can taken to prevent Head injuries. Some of them are :-

  • Wear a seatbelt every time while driving.
  • Secure rugs and loose electrical cords, install bars and handrails if you are frail or elderly.
  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Do not wear any clothing that interferes with your vision.
  • Follow all the rules and warning signs at water parks and while swimming.
  • Wear proper headgears while performing sports.
