Clinical Outcomes & Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)

At Adam Vital Hospital, successful treatment is assessed through clinical findings, imaging and surgical results, together with how patients feel, function and return to everyday life.

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are validated questionnaires completed directly by patients to measure changes in pain, mobility, physical function, disability and quality of life before and after treatment.

By systematically collecting and analysing PROMs, we gain a clearer understanding of the outcomes that matter most to our patients.

Measuring What Matters to Patients

Clinical tests can tell us how a joint, spine or tissue has healed. PROMs provide another important perspective: the patient's own experience of recovery.

PROMs help our clinical teams understand whether treatment has improved:
  • ● Pain and Symptom Severity
  • ● Mobility and Physical Function
  • ● Ability to Perform Daily Activities
  • ● Joint- or Spine-Related Disability
  • ● Overall Health and Quality of Life

Why PROMs Matter at Adam Vital Hospital

PROMs support our commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based and outcome-focused care.

They allow us to compare a patient's condition before treatment with their progress following treatment, giving our specialists additional information alongside clinical examination, imaging and other objective measures.

The Information Can Support

Personalised Care

Understanding how pain, disability and function affect each patient helps clinicians evaluate recovery from the patient's perspective.

Monitoring Treatment Outcomes

Pre-treatment and post-treatment PROM scores enable us to monitor how patients progress following surgery or other clinical interventions.

Shared Clinical Decision-Making

PROMs can support discussions between patients and their physicians regarding symptoms, functional limitations and treatment progress.

Continuous Quality Improvement

Aggregated outcome data helps us evaluate clinical pathways and identify opportunities to further improve patient care.

How We Measure Outcomes

At Adam Vital Hospital, PROMs are collected across selected orthopaedic and spine clinical pathways using recognised condition-specific outcome measures. Patients are assessed at defined stages of their treatment journey, allowing their condition before treatment to be compared with their condition after treatment.

Our currently reported clinical pathways include :

  • Total Hip Arthroplasty
  • Total Knee Arthroplasty
  • Lumbar Spine Surgery
  • Cervical Spine Surgery
  • Carpal Tunnel Release
  • Rotator Cuff / Shoulder Treatment

Understanding the Scores

Different PROM instruments use different scoring systems.

For some measures, such as HOOS, JR. and KOOS, JR., higher scores indicate better function.

For disability-based measures such as Modified ODI, NDI and SPADI, lower scores indicate improvement because they reflect less pain, disability or functional limitation, according to the measure used.

For BCTQ, the original score has been converted to a standardized 0–100 scale for consistency in reporting, where lower scores indicate fewer symptoms and functional limitations. This means that improvement may appear as either an increase or decrease in score, depending on the questionnaire being used.

Clinical Outcomes & PROMs

Statistical Integrity Safeguards

Adam Vital Hospital employs rigorous methodological safeguards to ensure all publicly reported outcomes data is accurate, transparent, and clinically valid:

  • Prevention of Selective Bias: Systematic random sampling (k=2) is applied to consecutive eligible patient cohorts.
  • Sample Representativeness: Evaluated cohorts represent the true cross-section of treated surgical populations.
  • Statistical Adjustments: All reported gains are subjected to Tier 2 Case-Mix Risk Adjustment incorporating somatic comorbidities and objective Clinician-Reported Outcome Measures (CROMs).
  • Dispersion Measures: 95% Confidence Intervals are calculated and maintained in our internal statistical registries to verify clinical significance.

How PROMs Support Better Care

Patient Level
PROMs help physicians understand how symptoms and functional limitations are changing throughout the treatment journey.
Clinical Pathway Level
Aggregated PROMs allow our teams to monitor treatment outcomes and identify opportunities to improve care delivery.
Hospital Level
PROMs support transparent outcome measurement, quality improvement and the continued development of value-based healthcare.

Our Commitment to Outcome-Based Care

At Adam Vital Hospital, our goal extends beyond treating a condition. We aim to understand how treatment changes a patient's ability to move, function and return to the activities that matter to them.

By combining clinical expertise with validated Patient-Reported Outcome Measures, we continue to evaluate our results, improve our clinical pathways and strengthen the quality of care we provide across Orthopaedics, Spine and Sports Medicine.

Our commitment is to measure outcomes that matter to patients and use those insights to continuously improve the care we provide.
